How to delete unused slide layouts and masters in PowerPoint
Every time slides are pasted from another deck with their original formatting, PowerPoint brings that deck's master and its layouts along. They clutter the New Slide menu, carry their own fonts and colors, and their background images make the file heavier. You can remove the ones no slide uses in Slide Master view.
Find and delete unused layouts
- Go to View, Slide Master.
- Hover over a layout in the left pane. The tooltip says which slides use it, or that no slides use it.
- Select the layouts no slide uses and press Delete.
- Select Close Master View and save.
Remove a master that no slide uses
- In Slide Master view, select the top slide of the master (the larger thumbnail).
- If its layouts are not used by any slide, press Delete. PowerPoint will not let you delete a master that is still in use.
- If the master is marked as preserved, right-click it and clear Preserve Master first.
What the manual way misses
- Checking layouts one by one is slow in decks with several masters and dozens of layouts.
- There is no way to see how much file size each master is costing you.
- Removing unused masters does not merge the colors of the masters that remain.
